The 73-year-old has, with one interruption, has been a member of parliament since 1975 and said he would not run for another term in the upcoming general election. During his time in politics he has seen the fall of the Berlin Wall, which "had its roots in Willi Brandt's new eastern policy (Ostpolitik) and was compounded with the end of Soviet style communism and the end of fears over a nuclear disaster in Europe. He would name the SPD election victories in 1998 and 2002 as his moments of greatest joy in politics. "When Helmut Schmidt lost his chancellorship to Helmut Kohl in 1982," he experienced his biggest disappointment, he said in an email interview.
