Addressing the international community on July 9, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that he would step up assaults on Gaza. In a statement after a visit to the IDF Southern Command HQ in Be’er Sheva, Netanyahu said that Israel has “expanded operations against Hamas.” Israel launched an offensive, dubbed Operation Protective Edge, on July 8, in response to rocket launches from Gaza. The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) has called up thousands of reservists for the operation, which could include a possible ground invasion, according to news reports. “No country on earth would remain passive in the face of hundreds of rockets fired on its cities and Israel is no exception,” Netanyahu said on Wednesday evening.
