Palestinian Fawzi Abu Hanani holds a picture of his son Jaafar, sentenced for life in an Israeli jail for his militant activity in the Al-Aqsa Brigades, during a protest calling for the release of prisoners held in Israel, in the West Bank town of Jenin, Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2011. The prisoner issue, along with the right of return of refugees, and the future of Jerusalem, have been major obstacles in the peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians in the past. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is pressing ahead Tuesday with his diplomatic campaign to gain full U.N. membership, brushing aside heated Israeli objections and a promised U.S. veto as the issue of Palestinian statehood takes center stage with world leaders gathering for the opening of the U.N. General Assembly session. The partial view of the Arabic writing reads: 'The rights.... freedom'. (AP Photo/Mohammed Ballas) less
