Geivson is one of three boys from two families of the Saramandaia slum who help sustain their families by collecting aluminium cans in the polluted Arruda Canal, to sell for recycling. According to the 2010 national census by Brazil's Institute for Applied Economic Research (IPEA), 3.6% of the 20,166 people who collect items for recycling in Pernambuco State, are aged 10-17.
