New pavement is laid on westbound Highway 50 in the final stages of the Fix 50 project in Sacramento, Calif., Thursday, June 12, 2014. Work to strengthen the elevated lanes of the artery through downtown Sacramento, against earthquakes and widen the highway's shoulders, began on the eastbound lanes in April and was completed in the middle of May. C.C. Meyers, the contractor making the repairs, told a local television station that repairs on the westbound section, which began May 27, are expected to finish June 19, a week ahead of the June 25 deadline.
