In this April 9, 2013 photo, a circus artist performs with an elephant at the Rambo Circus on the outskirts of Mumbai, India. Circuses around the world may struggle to compete with an ever-increasing array of entertainment options, but India’s once-widespread industry in particular has gone through cataclysmic changes. In the 1990s, there were 300 circuses operating throughout the country. That number has now dwindled to about 30, says circus manager John Matthew, and many of those are in financial trouble due to rising costs of renting field space, shrinking revenues and - crucially - two Supreme Court rulings that took away two of the industry’s main attractions.
