In this photo taken Wednesday, July 16, 2014, a Uighur man walks near cows in Kuqa in western China's Xinjiang province. China has blanketed parts of Xinjiang, home to Muslim, Turkic-speaking Uighurs, with such a heavy security presence that it resembles an occupied territory under martial law. The pervasive deployment of armed troops, spiked barricades, checkpoints and even drones makes it difficult to discern any sign on the ground of the Chinese leadership’s new push to foster ethnic mingling between Uighurs and the country’s Han Chinese majority.
