IMAGE DISTRIBUTED FOR HUMANE SOCIETY INTERNATIONAL - Dog meat vendors chop meat in a market in Yulin city in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Saturday June 22, 2013. Protestors descended on Yulin in the days leading up to the festival because the commercial trade in dogs for meat consumption causes pain and suffering to animals. Investigations throughout Asia have documented severe cruelty at all stages of the dog meat trade, including sourcing, transport, sale and slaughter. Humane Society International CEO and President Andrew Rowan, Ph.D., sent letters urging Chinese ambassadors to the United States, United Kingdom and Canada to work with officials in Yulin to end the inhumane annual event.
