This picture, released by the Library of Congress, dated between 1861 and 1869, shows buildings at the Armory Square Hospital facility in Washington, D.C. During the Second Battle of Bull Run in the summer of 1862, Dr. Bowman Bigelow Breed could hear the cannonading from his rooms at the Armory Square Hospital. The next several days were a blur of activity, with Bowman "Going from one ward to another cutting off arms and legs sometimes two or three operating at once," he wrote in a letter to his wife, Hannah. less
