RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL - JUNE 29: Kids wearing Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo football shirts walk through an alley of the Complexo do Alemao favela on June 29, 2013 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It was at the end of 2010 that under the stage of pacification some 300 police officers went into the Complexo do Alemao with tanks and helicopters to drive out the criminal gangs to establish a permanent police presences and to set up social services such as schools, healthcare centers, and rubbish collection. The Complexo do Alemao favela is, with a population of 100, 000 and stretching for more than 3 kilometers with a maze of narrow alleys and stairways, one of the largest favelas in Rio de Janeiro.
