A senior Chinese government official faced protesters on his first visit to the self-ruled island of Taiwan. Zhang Zhijun, director of China’s Taiwan Affairs Office, travelled to Taiwan for talks with the pro-independence mayor of Kaohsiung, Chen Chu, following protests in March and April over a controversial trade deal. Zhijun is the first senior official to visit Taiwan following the end of the Chinese civil war in 1949.
