Riot police block protesting dock workers during a demonstration in central Athens, on Thursday, Oct. 14, 2010. The protesters are demanding improved benefits for their unemployed colleagues. Crisis-hit Greece is bracing for a surge in unemployment in 2011 amid continued economic austerity. Greece's Statistical Authority announced Thursday that the unemployment rate rose to 12 percent in July, defying a seasonal improvement in job figures during the tourism season. The Socialist government says the unemployment rate is set to rise to 14.5 percent next year and 15 percent in 2012. less
