A rocket attack near the Erez checkpoint, one of the main crossings between the Gaza Strip and Israel, fatally injured one Israeli on July 15. The 37-year-old man was rushed to the Barzilai Medical Center in Ashkelon, where he was pronounced dead after several unsuccessful resuscitation attempts. According to a report by the Jerusalem Post, the victim was reportedly a Chabad rabbi volunteering to distribute food to soldiers. The possibility of an Egypt-backed cease-fire collapsed on June 15, as fresh rocket attacks by Palestinian militants in Gaza were answered by renewed Israeli airstrikes. According to Israeli officials, the IDF refrained from airstrikes for six hours on Tuesday morning before Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave the order to resume strikes.
