The Supreme Court paved the way for gay marriage in California,but sidestepped a broad ruling that would affect the whole country by saying it could not decide a closely watched case on the constitutionality of a California law that restricts marriage to opposite-sex couples. The Supreme Court has struck down a key provision of the Defense of Marriage Act, ruling that same-sex spouses legally married in a state may receive federal benefits. The high court rules a key part of the Defense of Marriage Act is unconstitutional. Nearly 150 years after the United States decided that no person should be denied equal protection under the law, the United States Supreme Court on Wednesday declared it unconstitutional to restrict federal marriage benefits for same-sex couples. less
