Amit Shah, the newly appointed president of India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) smiles during a news conference in New Delhi July 9, 2014. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's closest political associate was named the president of BJP on Wednesday as the leader tightened his grip on the party he carried to its biggest election victory this summer. Shah is a controversial former minister from Modi's home state of Gujarat in western India.
