President Barack Obama praised the Supreme Court's ruling on gay marriage as a "victory for American democracy" and said recognition for same-sex unions should cross state lines. Costly state-by-state battles are set to resume that could, in the hopes of both sides, spread marriage equality to more states, or reveal a brick wall of traditional values that cannot be breached. Chip Starnes, the American executive held hostage by Beijing factory workers, has now been released.
