The Supreme Court paved the way for gay marriage in California,but sidestepped a broad ruling that would affect the whole country by saying it could not decide a closely watched case on the constitutionality of a California law that restricts marriage to opposite-sex couples. The Supreme Court has struck down a key provision of the Defense of Marriage Act, ruling that same-sex spouses legally married in a state may receive federal benefits. Chanting "DOMA is Dead," supporters of same-sex marriage burst into cheers and some wept, openly upon hearing word of the Supreme Court's decision, striking down a federal law defining marriage as a union between a man and a woman. less
