A man puts up wood covers for windows at a store in New Orleans on August 29. Hurricane Gustav gained strength as it bore down on western Cuba after ripping through the Cayman Islands, Dominican Republic, Haiti and Jamaica and leaving 85 people dead in its wake. Anxiety also was mounting on the hurricane-ravaged US Gulf Coast on the third anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.
