Street cleaners pick trash up on the first day of regular service after a 13-day strike by street sweepers in Madrid November 18, 2013. The cleaners walked off the job on November 5 after three companies with maintenance contracts with city hall sought to freeze salaries and lay off 1,134 out of 6,000 workers. After marathon talks from Friday to Sunday, union representatives agreed to a deal under which no workers would be laid off, but every worker would have to take six weeks without pay each year through 2017.
