Gov. George Wallace blocks the door Alabama Gov. George Wallace made national headlines when he fulfilled his promise to stand in the schoolhouse door to block public school integration. On June 11, 1963, Wallace stood in the doorway of the University of Alabama so two black students, Vivian Malone and James Hood, could not register. John F. Kennedy then federalized the Alabama National Guard, and ordered its units to the university campus, at which point the governor stepped aside. less
