Buddhist monk sets himself on fire On June 11, 1963, Thich Quang Duc, a Buddhist monk in Vietnam, set himself on fire in a busy intersection on a Saigon street. His self-immolation was in protest of the Catholic Diem regime running the South Vietnamese government. Malcolm Browne, who shot the film of the burning monk, wrote that he had been alerted to the protest, as other reporters had been. "They all ignored it," he wrote. "I did not. That was all." less
