In this Thursday, Oct. 14, 2010 picture, Mike Listman, spokesperson for the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center, CIMMYT, surveys shelves holding seeds of some of the 150,000 varieties of wheat at the center's refrigerated, earthquake-proof seed bank in Texcoco, Mexico. Scientists draw on these seeds to crossbreed better-yielding, disease-resistant varieties. Future wheat supplies are in question because of stagnating yields, the spread of a wheat fungus, global warming and a volatile, unreliable market. less
