Trump visits Scotland to reopen golf resort

Most presidential candidates go abroad to sharpen their foreign policy credentials. Donald Trump, however, arrived in Scotland on Friday, June 24, 2016, to reopen a golf resort. Trump officially opened his Turnberry golf resort, which has undergone an eight-month refurbishment as part of an investment thought to be worth about 200 million pounds.

During the closely watched visit, Trump hailed Britain’s vote to leave the European Union, drawing parallels with the anger driving his own campaign.

“I love to see people take their country back,” he said at a news conference. “And that’s really what’s happening in the United States.”

The campaign leading to the June 23 stunning vote for Britain to leave the European Union shared some of the nationalist, populist themes driving Trump’s campaign, including a wariness of immigration, concern about borders and skepticism of the value of multinational organizations.

Several dozen protesters demonstrated outside the resort but were kept at a distance from the candidate and the course. But one man, wearing a Turnberry fleece, briefly interrupted the news conference by tossing a box of golf balls emblazoned with the Nazi logo. (AP)
