Ukrainian riot police separate opponents and advocates of the Russian language bill outside the Ukrainian parliament in Kiev, Ukraine, Tuesday, June 5, 2012. Several thousand flag-waving activists staged a noisy protest outside the parliament building, protesting the bill that would keep Ukrainian as the only official language in the country, but Russian could be used in courts, hospitals and other institutions in Russian-speaking regions. Defying vehement opposition, Ukraine's pro-government lawmakers on Tuesday gave tentative approval to a hotly contested bill that would allow the use of the Russian language alongside Ukrainian in some regions.
