Under a stormy sky, Travis Merritt of Blacksburg looks over a crop of collard greens, kale, mustard and beets that he has planted at the Hale YMCA Community Garden in Blacksburg Va., Tuesday April 15 2014. Concerned about cold weather and the possibility of sub-freezing temperatures, Merritt has rigged an elaborate set of PVC pipe structures with semitransparent row cloth that he hopes will keep his plants a few degrees warmer should it freeze overnight. The structures also obstruct insect pests from his produce plants he said.
