Nearly 7,000 couples same-sex domestic partnerships will be converted to marriage in Washington. The change, which voters passed in November 2012 as Referendum 74, will automatically give more than 1,000 federal protections to same-sex registered domestic partners in Washington who are younger than 62. Those advantages include Social Security survivor benefits, the ability to file a federal tax return as a married couple and eligibility for Family and Medical Leave Act time to care for a sick spouse. less
