The threat of a terrorist attack led to the weekend closure of 21 U.S. embassies and consulates in the Muslim world and a global travel warning to Americans, the first such alert since an announcement before the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 strikes. The United States issued a worldwide travel alert warning Americans that al Qaeda may be planning attacks in August, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa. The State Department travel alert was based on the same intelligence that prompted it to close 21 U.S. embassies and consulates, chiefly those in the Muslim world. President Barack Obama says there are no gimmicks to grow the economy ? just difficult steps that require Washington's focus. In his weekly radio and Internet address, Obama promoted a plan he calls a grand bargain that he says can break through gridlock. Obama says he's willing to work to reform the tax code for businesses but many loopholes and deductions need to be done away with. less
