Photograph of Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) posed for a formal portrait. He was elected sixteenth president of the United States in 1860. During the U.S. Civil War he issued the Emancipation Proclamation (1863) proclaiming freedom for slaves in states under Confederate control. Five days after the end of the Civil War (April 14, 1865) Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth in Fordâs Theater, Washington. The next day Lincoln died. (Getty Images) less
