When it comes to family pictures, the portrait studio is out and the great outdoors are in. Modern family pictures and local photographers are capturing families in their natural habitat. Where should you, your spouse and the kids meet up with a photographer for some picture-perfect family portraits?
Local Park
A local park is a perfect choice for your family pictures. Does your park have a stream, bridge, lightly wooded area, playground or small hills for rolling and picnicking? You can utilize various locations within your local park to add some color and life to your family portraits. Station the entire family on the monkey bars, hide under the picnic blanket or lean your elbows on the bridge railing and smile for the camera. Choose a sunny day, though slightly overcast can also work well for natural lighting. For large families and families with young children, a local park can provide a spectacular backdrop for family portraits.
Main Street
Is there a busy Main Street in the heart of your city center? Local shops, cobblestone streets, and even passersby can create wonderful backgrounds for family portraits. A family picture eating ice cream cones on a brick wall overlooking the water, for instance, is a wonderful choice in downtown Annapolis or Baltimore. If where you live is part of your family, don't leave it out of your next family picture.
Sports Venue
If you have a family of soccer players, consider heading to the local soccer field and taking some family pictures in front of (or in) the soccer goal. Are you fans of the Washington Redskins? A shot with FedEx Field in the background might be an ideal choice. Sit in the bleachers of your local high school's baseball or football field. Select attire that matches your location; think baseball hats or basketball jerseys, for instance. Bring your family's hobbies to life by incorporating them into family portraits.
Beach
The beach is a tried-and-true family portrait location for families venturing outside of the portrait studio. The water, white sands, clouds in the sky, sand castles and tall beach grasses are all perfect backgrounds for a relaxed family shot. White shirts and jeans or khaki pants tend to photograph well and are commonly worn by families who choose a beach location, but don't be afraid to show your personal style. Try pictures of the kids feeling the water with their toes or the family walking away together and holding hands for a more artistic twist on this out-of-the-studio staple.
The best family picture location is the one where your family and individual personalities can shine through.
