“Even young children can help select the photos that will be included and that makes them feel very connected to the story and the people in it,” explains Reed.
When Daddy Is Serving His Country
The feeling of connection was extremely important to Reed when she created the Picture Perfect Children’s Storybooks. The wife of a U.S. serviceman, she was aware that deployments and long separations were simply a part of military life, but unsure what to do to help her family cope with Daddy’s absence.
“We had two toddlers and a baby on the way when my husband received news of his first deployment,” recalls Reed. “I wanted to find a way to help our older children remember Daddy while he was away. But I was even more concerned about giving our infant – the one he wouldn’t meet until he returned – a way to connect with her father.” She decided that a picture and storybook about her husband would be the perfect solution and that’s how the “My Daddy” storybook album was born.
When Reed’s husband finally did return home and met his daughter for the first time, the little girl took to him immediately. “The bond the book had established allowed father and daughter to come together with no awkwardness or hesitation,” reports Reed. “It was a beautiful thing to witness.”
Serving Her Country, One Young Reader at a Time
The brain builds itself based on repetitive sensory experiences. “So reading and re-reading family stories can be an important part of that process, helping children to grow mentally,” explains Reed. “And helping even young children develop a love for listening and reading will benefit them throughout their lives.”
So although it is her husband that wears a uniform, Reed feels she is also “serving our country...one young reader at a time.”
