Piglet Escapes From Slaughterhouse To Wear Purple Jumpers At Pig Sanctuary

A little pig who escaped a future on someone’s plate is now living life in his new home at an animal sanctuary.

And while he might have once been a pink in blanket, Irwin the piglet now spends his days wrapped up warm in his very own purple jumper.

Irwin’s story started off looking bleak, born and raised in a community that breeds animals specifically so they can be slaughtered for food.

But the poor little animal had trouble walking and was the runt of the litter, rejected by his own mother.

Community members were forced to bottle feed Irwin - but still with the intention of serving him up for dinner one day.

But a visitor to the community managed to persuade them to let Irwin go and live life on the Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary, where he is now growing up without fear of being killed.

Terry Cummings, co-founder of the sanctuary, told Huffington Post: “He will be able to live at the sanctuary for the rest of his life with the 48 other rescued pigs.”

Cummings said that Irwin now "spends his days running and playing in the sun, chasing chickens, rooting in the dirt and hanging out with his best friend Evie, the three-legged baby goat”.

The sanctuary posted a pic of Irwin in his favourite jumper to update people about his progress.

They wrote on Facebook: “Today is a big day for little Irwin - he’s graduated from the play area in the infirmary to a stall in the barn.

“But it’s chilly so he gets lots of straw to make a nest in, a heat lamp AND an adorable purple sweater! “

The piglet is expected to grow to around 50lbs at full size and has a life expectancy of around 15 years - a lot more than his brothers and sisters he left at the community he was born.

Cummings added: "Irwin is so incredibly happy and healthy now. He enjoys his life to the fullest!”
