    Pitney Bowes 4Q profit jumps on tax benefit

    STAMFORD, Conn. (AP) — Mailing equipment and software maker Pitney Bowes Inc. said Thursday its profit climbed in the fourth quarter on a large tax benefit and a drop in restructuring and other expenses.

    Pitney Bowes said its profit grew to $257.5 million, or $1.28 per share, from $63 million, or 31 cents per share. The results included a tax benefit from discontinued operations that added $1.04 per share to its profit, 41 cents per share in goodwill impairment charges, and 31 cents per share in restructuring and asset impairment charges.

    Excluding one-time items, Pitney Bowes said it earned 61 cents per share from continuing operations. Its revenue fell 7 percent, to $1.34 billion from $1.43 billion.

    Analysts expected adjusted earnings of 59 cents per share and revenue of $1.37 billion, according to FactSet.

    The company said its sales to small and medium-size businesses fell in the latest quarter, and some large business customers delayed their purchases, leading revenue from small and medium-size businesses to fall 6 percent to $666 million and enterprise business solutions revenue to fall 7 percent to $675 million.

    The company said economic and business uncertainty also hurt its results.

    Pitney Bowes said its annual profit grew to $617.5 million, or $3.05 per share, including a benefit of $1.31 per share from tax benefits. In 2010 it earned $292.4 million, or $1.41 per share. Revenue declined 3 percent, to $5.28 billion from $5.43 billion.

    For the current year, the company expects to earn $2.05 to $2.25 per share from continuing operations. It said its revenue could grow as much as 2 percent or decline as much as 2 percent, excluding the impacts of changes in foreign currency exchange rates.

    Analysts expect a profit of $2.16 per share and $5.21 billion in revenue on average.

    Shares of Pitney Bowes rose 4 cents to close Thursday at $19.54 before the company reported its results. The shares lost a penny in aftermarket trading.
