Plans for Detroit River rail tunnel move forward

Plans move forward for new $400M, 1.6-mile rail tunnel connecting Detroit and Windsor, Ontario

DETROIT (AP) -- Supporters of a long-delayed second rail tunnel under the Detroit River say the project could break ground as early as next year.

The Detroit News reports ( http://bit.ly/16cdiLY) the plan to replace an double train tunnel between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, has some hurdles, including securing half the amount needed for the $400 million project from the U.S. and Canadian governments.

The Detroit-Windsor Crossing's proponents say the tunnel will increase trade with Canada and link Detroit to other high-volume ports. The tunnel project comes amid plans backed by Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder to build a second bridge over the river.

The project was called The Jobs Tunnel when it was proposed in 2003. At least $200 million has been pledged for the 1.6-mile tunnel.

Construction could take two years.
