Poland's unemployment down to 13.5 percent in May

Poland's jobless rate falls to 13.5 percent in May due to increase in seasonal jobs

WARSAW, Poland (AP) -- Poland's jobless rate fell to 13.5 percent at the end of May from 14 percent the previous month as warmer weather saw an increase in seasonal outdoor jobs.

The Central Statistical Office said Tuesday that some 2.17 million people in this nation of 38 million were without a job in May.

Experts say that the economy is showing the first signs of recovery after a sharp slowdown last year, when it grew a mere 1.9 percent, compared with 4.5 percent in 2011.

Ever since the transition from communist to market economy 23 years ago, Poland has struggled with unemployment of above 10 percent.
