Police: 2 Nebraska boys kept in wire dog kennel

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (AP) — Four children were removed from what authorities described as a filthy Nebraska trailer home where a 3-year-old boy and his 5-year-old brother were kept in a wire dog kennel, police said Tuesday.

North Platte officers went to the home late Monday after receiving a call from someone asking that police check on the welfare of the children living there, police Lt. Rich Hoaglund said. When officers went inside, they were met with the stench of urine and found trash and animal feces throughout the home, Hoaglund said.

An officer soon found two boys, ages 3 and 5, in a 30-by-42-inch wire dog kennel.

"They had a small child's mattress in there, and that's where both kids were sleeping," Hoaglund said. "The gate on that door was wired shut."

The children's mother, 22-year-old Ashly Clark, told officers she put her boys in the kennel at night to keep them from climbing out of the trailer through a window, Hoaglund said.

A couple — 25-year-old Bryson Eyten and 24-year-old Samantha Eyten — also lived in the trailer with their 8-year-old and 8-month-old children. Hoaglund said those children were not kept in the kennel.

Hoaglund said that while the children were living in filthy conditions, there was no evidence to suggest they had been physically abused or were malnourished.

Clark, the Eytens and 20-year-old Lacy Beyer, who police said also lived in the trailer, were arrested Monday night and charged Tuesday with two counts of first-degree false imprisonment, two counts of felony child abuse and misdemeanor child abuse, based on the condition of the house. The children have been placed with state authorities.

"All of the adults were aware of the situation and were aware of the kids were being housed in the animal kennel and did nothing to stop it or report it," he said.

All four made initial appearances in court Tuesday afternoon, and bail was set at $50,000 for each.

Lincoln County Attorney Rebecca Harling said each of the four asked for a public defender during the court hearing Tuesday.

"They were ordered to have no contact with the four children taken into custody," Harling said.

Being financially disadvantaged is not an excuse to live in filth. Heck if they weren't working they had all day to clean.

Too dammed lazy to work is the problem ands thats one of the reasons why a lot of kids turn up missing.

Like everyone else here I grew up poor but I guarantee almost none of our houses were close to dirty. Poor is an economic condition- trash is something totally different
      • tom m 7 mths ago
No offense but I didn't see anything about the parents not working, maybe you read a different article. I never read anything that mentioned their financial status either...you didn't read the article did you? Apparently none of the people who gave you thumbs up read it either. They were #$%$amp;#39;s that were abusing the children, let's not bring up things that weren't even in the article ok.

I personally live in a mobile home in a very nice park ..My husband and I have 3 boys 2 of which live at home ..They are honor roll ,honor band and all city track ..Where you live doesn't matter its how you live that is important ..You can be poor and still take care of your children and home ..These people don't care about themselves or their children ..These children should be removed and placed in a home that truly wants them :)

America needs more people like LindaF. We need people like her far more than we need some of the national and state politicians.

You're just a responsible loving parent to your children. The polar opposite of these animals who shouldn't be parents to begin with. Bless you and your family.

The parents certainly deserve to be put in a cage. What are we showing the kids who were locked in the cage if we lock up their parents in the same type of cage? No one wins here, but the kids lose.

I wonder what size kennel the large mothers will be housed in.
    • Chantel  •  New Orleans, United States  •  6 mths ago
It is ridiculous how some people treat their own children. Apparently none of the animals were in the kennels but the poor children were, while the animals were able to wander freely and defecate all over the place, absolutely disgusting. There is no excuse for this abuse, and yes it is abuse. Hopefully those kids will not be allowed back with that poor excuse for a mother and will find someone that will care for them and love them like they deserve.

Sick & disturbing. I hope they enjoy their new wire dog cages aka " Jail " I also think these women should banned from producing children ever again.

I agree that these people are total trash. But you don't have to live in a trailer to be trash. There are plenty of people who love their children and are good parents that live in clean trailers. My brother has always lived in a trailer, and it is super clean and he has raised to wonderful twin boys by himself in that trailer. Just because you can't afford a house, does not automatically make you trailer trash. There are plenty of trashy people to go around from all walks of life. Being poor is not an automatic qualification.

kids are welfare tickets for many people - direct lines for free food and health care. it's a sick thing - but true. we see it more and more. they are nothing but "property" to adults who have no idea how to teach themselves how to live, let alone - children.
