Police use Facebook to try to find person who dropped bag of cocaine

Hey! Did you happen to drop a bag of cocaine inside a dollar store in southwest Virginia on Tuesday? If you did, local police would like you to contact them — on Facebook.

The Crewe, Va. (population 2,200), police department posted a message on its Facebook page in the hopes of finding the rightful owner of the cocaine found at Super Dollar.

“If you mistakenly dropped your cocaine today and were at the Super Dollar, please contact us," the department wrote. "We would like to talk with you further about your property.”

Not that they expected anyone would come forward.

"We knew no one would," Beverly Redman, an administrative assistant who helps run the Crewe P.D. Facebook page, told Yahoo News. "We wanted to show people that we're human, too. We have a sense of humor. We're not all 'just cops.'"

The Facebook all-points bulletin has attracted lots of attention, generating more than 400 likes, 300 shares and 100 comments — some asking if the police actually would return the cocaine if its owner came forward to claim it.

"NO!" the department, which has six police officers, responded. "We will not give you back your illegal narcotics. The narcotics are weighed, photographed and placed into a evidence locker to be destroyed upon the approval of the courts. We distribute lots of things, such as lollipops to our favorite kids, and tickets to lead footed friends, but we do not re-distribute your drugs. We hope this clarifies our post a bit more."

Others questioned why the Facebook post stated that "it appears to be cocaine."

"It 'appears to be' is lingo we use before it is scientifically tested by the Department of Forensic Science," the department wrote. "After they test it then it becomes 'it is'. :)"

"How much was it?" Steven Smith asked. "I lost 3.7 grams including the bag weight today and I did go shopping at the Super Dollar."

"Nope. Wasn't 3.7 grams," the department replied. "Sorry."
