Police investigating report of fight, gunshots in Lewiston

Apr. 26—LEWISTON — Local and county police descended on Sabattus Street late Thursday night after gunshots were reported following a dispute in the street.

Police were called out to the area of Sabattus and College streets at about 11:30 p.m. when at least one caller reported hearing several shots fired in the area.

Police swarmed the parking lot of Dave's Place, a store at the intersection, while others fanned out further up College Street. By midnight, a half dozen police cruisers were parked in the lot, including two from the Androscoggin County Sheriff's Department.

Further up College Street, other officers were searching an area outside an apartment house. Police blocked off College Street to traffic at Sabattus Street.

It was not immediately clear where the shooting occurred or if anyone was hurt. Dave's Place was not open when when the shots were reported.

Witnesses reported that police were out with long guns drawn when they first arrived on the scene.

One area woman reported she first heard what sounded like an argument between at least two men in the area of Dave's Place. Moments later, she heard several gunshots and called 911. She said she first heard one gunshot. Then, after a pause, ten or eleven more shots were fired, she said.

"Sounded like all the same gun," she said.

Police remained at the scene early Friday morning. No further information was available.
