Police lower Norway attacks death toll to 76

(AP/Aftenposten/Jon-Are Berg-Jacobsen)OSLO, Norway (AP) — Police announced Monday that they had dramatically overcounted the number of people slain in a shooting spree at a political youth group's island retreat and were lowering the confirmed death toll from 86 to 68.

The overall toll in the attack now stands at 76 instead of 93 — still one of the worst modern mass murders in peacetime.

Police spokesman Oystein Maeland said that higher, erroneous figure emerged as police and rescuers were focusing on helping survivors and securing the area, but he did not immediately explain more about how the overcounting occurred.

Police also raised the toll from a bombing outside the government's headquarters in Oslo before the shooting spree, from seven to eight.

Anders Behring Breivik has confessed to both assaults but denied criminal responsibility for them and pleaded not guilty at his first hearing. He told the court he wanted to save Europe from Muslim immigration and warned that there are two other cells of his terror network.

The court ordered him held for eight weeks while prosecutors investigate, four of which will be in isolation, saying Breivik could tamper with evidence if released. Typically, the accused is brought to court every four weeks while prosecutors prepare their case, so a judge can approve his continued detention. Longer periods are not unusual in serious cases.

Breivik made clear in an Internet manifesto that he planned to turn his court appearance into theater, preparing a speech for his appearance in court even before launching the attacks, then requesting an open hearing in which he would wear a uniform. Both of those requests were denied.

The suspect has said staged the bombing and youth camp rampage as "marketing" for his manifesto calling for a revolution that would rid Europe of Muslims.

"The operation was not to kill as many people as possible but to give a strong signal that could not be misunderstood that as long as the Labor Party keeps driving its ideological lie and keeps deconstructing Norwegian culture and mass importing Muslims then they must assume responsibility for this treason," according to the English translation of Heger's ruling that was read out after the hearing.

Breivik alluded to two other "cells" of his network — which he imagines as a new Knights Templar, the medieval cabal of crusaders who protected Christian pilgrims in the Holy Land. At one point, his manifesto briefly referred to an intention to contact two other cells, but no details were given.

European security officials said they were aware of increased Internet chatter from individuals claiming they belonged to the Knights Templar group and were investigating claims that Breivik, and other far-right individuals, attended a London meeting of the group in 2002.

Reporters and locals thronged the courthouse on Monday ahead of the hearing for their first glimpse of Breivik since the assault. When one car drove through the crowd, people hit its windows and one person shouted an expletive, believing Breivik was inside.

He is the perfect example of what being isolationist, ethnocentric and exclusionary does to a person. To everyone who thinks he was justified in this atrocity learn to live with your fellow man and quit being such arrogant pricks. Not allowing open immagration because you dislike a culture is just plain ignorant.

yep but that's the result to another lie, trying to say everybody can be mixed and that's a huge mistake because you drop an important thing mutual respect then you end with extremism and racism statements which are theoretically punished by law and they call themselves patriot and just walk on the constitution like it was a dirty paper toilet

who thinks this guy was justified in his actions? Someone may not be a fan of open immigration as you put it,but that doesn't make them on the side of that lunatic

By mixing over time mutual respect is derived. Just look at the difference between early periods in american history, the irish, polish, germans, russians, and a slue of other european people came to america and were treated like garbage. They were considered less than human, now through laxing of ignorant slogans, and intermarrying, there isnt really any negative harsh negative views towards any one group of europeans. You typically dont see a guy with the last name O'Mally harrassed for being irish. All of the bigoted hatred against european immigrants pretty much died now, we dont even seperate the concept of different ethnicities from europe, we simply call those people white. Sure there are people who hate white people, but through the interbreeding and marrying of these groups of people intergroup intolernace is way down. Same thing is happening with african americans. Racism still exists no doubt about it, but things are a million times better than 100 years ago, and in a 100 years things will be a million time better than they are now. By isolating yourslef from other cultures and people you dont learn to except their similarities to you only get hung up on their differences. America is a melting pot, and cultures blend into one another allowing for the beautiful aspects of each culture to continue through time, while leaving the exclusionist aspects of each culture to die out. By allowing all peoples of all races, creeds, genders, nationalitites, and sexual orientations to come together to be in the same country together you create tolerance by necesity. Sure it doesnt happen quickly and maybe not even within our children's lifetiems but it happens, and that is what we should be motivated towards. Being intolerant of any difference between you and someone else can be boiled down to little more than your lack of knowledge of that person. Being in the same country, same state, same county, same job, using the same websites, reading the same books, being in the same classrooms and speaking to one another decreases the lack of knowledge which only bridges the gap between to different people. Being exlusionist, ethnocentric and isolationist only leads to a toxic and corrosive way of thinking that helps no one.

Why is the media doing what he said he wanted.....showing him in his uniform....STOP
      • Alyssa 10 mths ago
Just as in Emperor Jones and Lord of the Flies, the uniform is his way of demonstrating his 'power'. By displaying him in it is only feeding his idea of people recgonizing his power.

They're never going to let him go. The way it works is that he would come up before a sort of parole board after his first 21 years in prison. They then determine if he's safe to release, and you can bet they never will. He's going away for all day. The Norwegians are not stupid and they've seen first hand what he's capable of. They've lost so many children and the grandchildren they would have had - nope, don't worry. Breivig will never walk.

That's kind of a big miscalculation. Tragic no matter what.
      • Andres H 10 mths ago
I get the feeling someone flipped that 68 to a 86 by mistake, and then back.
      • headh 10 mths ago
        still that's off by 21%, that's a big mistake.

Okay so he wants to stop the immigration of Muslims into Norway. Why then do you kill the children of Norwegians? Defies logic. He's clearly sick and needs psychiatric care.
      • J. 52 10 mths ago
Well, he certainly doesn't deserve any sort of care. Execute the filthy bastard.
      • The Original Frank 10 mths ago
Because they belong to the political party that caters to the Muslims. The campers were sympathizers in training.
      • Harlow 10 mths ago
Thank you "Frank" I'm getting a better understanding. Still it's a sick act from a very sick man. "J.52" your passion is clear, but in the end killing him will not make things better. He is sick. It's all very very sad.

I love how the maximum sentence for this is 21 years. If I'm not mistaken, he's can also be eligible for parole after around 14 years. So he could be a free man by the time he's 46. Not to mention that European prisons, especially Norwegian ones, are generally way nicer than the ones in the US. It's like an all-expenses paid spa. I wanna get arrested :'(

Poor Norway. And now they get to support the creep for 21 years.

    • Mike  •  10 mths ago
He hates Muslims, so he kills white people?? Wierd!!!

A uniform... I LOVE the chutzpah of this clown.

Demanding a uniform says two things...

1- His ego is huge, and

      2- His Johnson ISN'T.

They should give this freak no publicityat all.

"Breivik alluded to two other "cells" of his network" This guy is a classic! I mean, here this story is just beginning to unfold, there isn't even a book or movie deal yet, and already the ground work for a sequel is being laid!
    • scott  •  10 mths ago
Hey look! The News is finally calling an act of terror "an act of terror." They are even calling the terrorist "a terrorist"!
    • Patrick  •  10 mths ago
wow, such a sad story and even worse that someone can't get their "hands" on this guy.
    • I'm Done  •  10 mths ago

No matter what his reasons for his barbaric act, it is no reason to ' KILL' innocent people. I have my reasons to irradicate fanatical muslims or whoever, no doubt about that. But, just like the Twin Towers in New York, no matter what the ideology is, there is no reason for abominable acts.. We're supposed to be an educated society. Where have we gone wrong? Now, to this terrorist, no mercy! Ok, he's a human being, but the correlation stops there. He is an animal, a very dangerous one. If he thinks he has an explanation for his abominable act, he should not be among us.
    • Cheryl  •  10 mths ago
Don;t give him publicity, no open court, no spouting of his manifesto, no reason needed- he did it for whatever reason and it is about time these nut cases receive no 15 minutes of fame. If he were after muslims, then why kill Norweigian children? No point in trying to figure him out-just a speedy trail and on to death row.

NOTHING CHRISTIAN ABOUT THIS SADIST CHILD MURDERER
    • Ernest Cruzen  •  10 mths ago
Didn't the security or people in charge noticed that he was armed to the teeth and has more ammonitions than necessary for his duty? How easily they were deceived by the uniform.
