Police Officer Zachary Barber honored with VFW National Law Enforcement Public Servant Citation

A number of Norwich Police Department personnel as well as two civilians were honored at the Norwich City Council meeting Monday night.

Officer First Class Zachary Barber was presented the VFW National Law Enforcement Public Servant Citation. This award is given to an individual who serves in a municipal, county, state or federal unit tasked with enforcement of the laws pertaining to their area of responsibility. Norwich Mayor Peter Nystrom presented Barber with a proclamation at the city council meeting, which thanked him for his efforts.

The criteria for the award includes recognition by colleagues or those they serve, consistent excellence in the performance of one’s duties, consistent dedication and continuous growth. Barber is the only officer to receive this award in Connecticut this year.

In addition, a police dispatcher, officers and two civilians were recognized for their efforts to save the life of an individual who tried to harm themselves on March 29. The following people received awards for saving that person’s life:

  • Officer First Class James Watts – Exceptional Service Award

  • Officer Victoria Clarke – Exceptional Service Award

  • Officer Megan Crawford – Exceptional Service Award

  • Officer Ryan Dunn – Life Saving Award

  • Dispatcher Dane Majewski – Exceptional Service Award

  • Kelsy Osorio – Chief’s Citation

  • Francisco Osorio – Chief’s Citation
