Police Officer’s ‘Compassion’ Saves Child’s Birthday

A child’s birthday celebration was almost ruined — until a very forgiving cop stepped in to save it.

Michael Kotsonis, a Portsmouth, N.H., officer was sent to discount store Ocean State Job Lot last week after receiving a report that a woman had shoplifted cake mix, shortening, and some containers of frosting, according to the Portsmouth Herald. When he arrived, he learned that the thief had stolen the ingredients to make a birthday cake for her child.

But instead of arresting the mother, Kotsonis paid for the ingredients and gave them to her. “It doesn’t make it right,” he told the Herald, “but the kid shouldn’t have to pay.”

A store employee who reported the officer’s good deed to the Herald, called it “the kindest thing in the entire world.” Acting Deputy Police Chief Frank Warchol added, “Mike’s compassion took over. He used discretion, and I guarantee the kids were happy.”

But Kotonis, a 19-year veteran at the department isn’t looking for attention and, in fact, wanted to remain anonymous, insisting that his fellow officers do similar deeds all the time. “We don’t publicize it,” he said. “We don’t do stuff to brag about it.”
