Police: Pa. man fakes mom's obit to get time off

BROOKVILLE, Pa. (AP) — Authorities in northwestern Pennsylvania say a man published an obituary for his living mother in a ploy to get paid bereavement time off from work.

Relatives called The Jeffersonian Democrat newspaper in Brookville after the obit appeared to report the woman was actually alive and well. The woman herself then visited the paper.

Brookville police charged 45-year-old Scott Bennett on Tuesday with disorderly conduct.

Democrat editor Randy Bartley says he accepted the obituary in good faith after being unable to confirm the funeral arrangements at press time. He told The Derrick newspaper (http://bit.ly/vDDqLi) on Friday that the woman was very understanding.

Police Chief Ken Dworek says Bennett wrote up the memorial notice because he didn't want to get fired for taking time off.

The Associated Press couldn't reach Bennett.

I wonder if he's still employed.

Maybe when you live with your mummy, at age 45, and still can't survive without her but want the inheritance she may leave, it would explain why you'd fake her death for a few days away from work...?!?!?!?!?

hey einstein, where does it say he lived with his mother, or is that you

Hey Sugarbyte3: There is nothing in the article saying he lived with his mother --- were you on drugs while reading the article?

Hey Blackie - not me, for nearly 6 years; just a shot-in-the-dark about someone who is so desperate to pull such a disgusting prank. I will call it an "educated guess"; people that desperate tend to have serious poop going on with their families.

Just when you thought you heard it all. LOL

Can't you hear his mother now? He meant no harm. He is such a good boy, perhaps mixed up, but no real harm in him. I hope he is not a beneficiary of her insurance. He is a liar, and if he were my son, I would be looking over my shoulder. Well, he will now have all the time off he needs. If he has real nerve he will ask his mother for shelter and money, if he runs out of both. Perhaps if he had used some honest, creativity in his job he might now be employed.

Why do I get the feeling that this idiot was just one write up away from being fired. Bet this was a dream come true for his boss.........Merry Christmas........and leave the decorations in my front yard alone.

While I agree that others should have his job...look at the geographical area this article comes from..one of the major hunting spots in PA. They close whole school districts so sonny boy can go hunting with Dad here the first couple of days of hunting season, because hunting is ever so much more important than learning something at school. (The experience has been that over half the male student population--and a goodly number of females-- of schools are otherwise MIA). Now the logical extension of this is... hunting is also more important than going to work. I base my theory on a number of things..one, the place, and secondly...the time of year, and thirdly, my experience with our own employees. Any time anyone questions this, a howl goes up and someone screams about an attack on a fine old American tradition!

Maybe he can plead not guilty and blame his mother for not dying on time.

Sounds like He did not like where he worked? And wanted away from it for a while.. ONLY down fall,, he had to go back to the same place to work... Guess Now He is Job hunting for a NEW job,, Wonder??? if he will find as good of a job next time around? I got a bet he got fired! Good luck Job hunting!!

My sister-in-law lives in the area and I'll tell you there aren't many jobs there at all. Basically there is a glut of workers and no jobs, any time off equals firing since there are plenty of people to take your place.

Sounds like the Brookville police have a lot of free time on their hands.

Hopefully he hasn't reproduced. Don't need more dead heads like him running around.
    • susan  •  5 mths ago
Heck...for most employers you have to prove YOU are dead, before taking time off...

Let me guess, he worked at McDonald's?
