Police Struggle to Impose Curfew in Ferguson: One Shot, Tear Gas, Seven Arrests
Police and protesters clashed in Ferguson for yet another night in which one person was shot and seven people arrested, as police struggled to impose a curfew in the town that has raged since the killing of an unarmed teen by a police officer a week ago.
The curfew, which was set for midnight to 5:00 a.m. in conjunction with a state of emergency declared by Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon, was not heeded by many protesters, although hundreds left in the final hour before the curfew.
Some of the remaining protesters chanted "No justice! No curfew!" while others were persuaded by leaders to call it a night. "C'mon you all, let's roll out," New Black Panther Party leader Malik Shabazz called out through a bullhorn. "Let's roll out of here, get some rest and come back tomorrow."
After the curfew went into effect, tear gas was used by police but Missouri State Highway Patrol Capt. Ron Johnson, who is in charge of security in Ferguson, said it was done to clear the area so that they could reach the individual who was shot "and not in relation to the curfew."

On Saturday, during a press conference, Johnson said that tear gas would not be deployed to carry out the curfew. "We won’t enforce it with trucks, we won’t enforce it with tear gas, we will enforce it with communication," Johnson said. "We will be telling people, 'It’s time to go home.'"
