Police: Suspected drug dealer robbed, shot at in the 5000 block of Hawberry Lane

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Someone shot at a suspected drug dealer about 7:15 p.m. Tuesday in the 5000 block of a Hawberry Lane during what police suspect was a drug deal, according to Lafayette police.

After the shot was fired, the cars involved in the incident sped away from the area, but the car in which the suspected dealer was a passenger returned to the scene as police were investigating, police said.

Officers' investigation indicated that the 23-year-old Lafayette man arrived in the area to sell drugs, but during the deal, he was battered by people who attempted to rob him and who shot at him, police said, noting that the man was not hit by the bullet.

Officers searched inside the car where the suspected dealer had been sitting and found drugs, according to police.

Officers jailed the man on suspicion of possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia. He has since been released from the Tippecanoe County Jail, according to online jail records.
