    Police say Wash. school shooting leaves 1 injured

    SEATTLE (AP) — An 8-year-old girl was shot in the abdomen at an elementary school in Washington state Wednesday afternoon and one of her classmates was detained, authorities said.

    The injured third-grader was airlifted to Seattle's Harborview Medical Center.

    Authorities said a third-grade boy was being questioned and a firearm was found in a classroom. No other details about the shooting, including the condition of the girl who was shot, were immediately available.

    The Bremerton Schools superintendent's office said the girl was shot in the stomach.

    Bremerton police Lt. Peter Fisher said officers and emergency crews were dispatched to Armin Jahr Elementary school in Bremerton around 1:30 p.m. in response to a call that a student was shot and injured by another student. The city is located about 20 miles west of Seattle, across Puget Sound.

    The school went into lockdown immediately after the shooting, said Bremerton Schools spokeswoman Patty Glaser. Lockdown procedures call for announcements to be made over the school's loudspeakers and for teachers to lock their classrooms, she said.

    Armin Jahr Elementary has about 400 students, Glaser said. She said the school will reopen Thursday and three counselors will talk to teachers, students and parents.

    "Our plans at this time, school will continue as usual," Glaser said.

    Police were working with the school district Wednesday afternoon to reunite parents with their children, Fisher said, and investigators were interviewing witnesses, which included students.

    As of mid-afternoon, parents were still arriving to pick up their children from the school in a quiet residential neighborhood. A police officer was checking vehicles as they entered the parking lot.

      What the hell has happened to our beautiful country? I teach kindergarten and my number one job is to keep the children safe. But little kids getting shot at school? I used to think we were a child-oriented society, but no more. I will spend the rest of my life advocating for children. We must all work together to make this a much better society for the children. They deserve it. Get involved and speak up.

      I am not against the right to bear arms. I myself have guns BUT FOR PETES SAKE PEOPLE KEEP THEM OUT OF THE HANDS OF OUR CHILDREN.....lock them up keep bullets in a separate place, and if u are gonna let them handle guns enroll them in gun saftey classes. ITS UP TO US TO TEACH THEM THE PROPER WAY TO HANDLE A FIRE ARM..

        Hand guns are for two things only protection and crime and im not talkin about comp shooting or range shooting you do that to make sure you can hit the target coming threw the door at you.

      im a 48 year old man with intence training by the army with wepons my 9 year old has his own gun in his room on his gun rack, and his father ( me) have trained him for hours on gun saftey AND common since to always think about what happens after your action.But kids are kids very curiousso the ammo stays in the safe. all parents need do is think backto when thay were kids ,i got my dads guns out all the time when i was young thank GOD he never keep ammo in the house and as i got older i learned most from him about life saftey thats what we need to teach are kids LIFE SAFTEY

        Gun education works. Holding parents responsible for their childrens actions works. Gun control only puts guns in the criminal hands while the rest of the comminity is at their mercy.putting the honest people at the mercy of the stupid and the criminal.
