Polish Catholics see miracle in communion wafer

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Roman Catholics in Poland gathered Sunday for a special Mass celebrating what they see as a miracle: the appearance on a communion wafer of a dark spot that they are convinced is part of the heart of Jesus.

The communion wafer in question developed a brown spot in 2008 after falling on the floor during a Mass in the eastern Polish town of Sokolka. Two medical doctors determined that the spot was heart muscle tissue, church officials have said.

Bialystok Archbishop Edward Ozorowski said during the Mass that in history, the "substance of Christ's body or blood has become available to the human senses, and this also happened in Sokolka."

"For God, nothing is impossible," Ozorowski said.

The dark-spotted wafer was carried aloft in a reliquary by a golden-robed priest in a procession and was put on display in the town's church of St. Anthony as about 1,000 faithful looked on, according to a report and footage carried by the TV station TVN.

Catholics believe that the bread and wine that priests use during the sacrament of communion — or the Eucharist — are changed into the body and blood of Jesus Christ.

The wafer was dropped by a priest celebrating communion in 2008. In accordance with church practice, the priest placed the wafer in water to dissolve it. Several days later a nun found that the wafer had not dissolved completely, and found a red mark on it.

The nun's discovery sparked huge interest among the faithful in this deeply Roman Catholic country, sparking large numbers to flock to Sokolka. Though some believers consider the object miraculous, the Vatican is still examining the matter and has not yet officially decided whether to declare it a miracle, church spokesman Andrzej Debski said.

A group of rationalists complained about the matter in 2008, and called on authorities to investigate if a murder or other crime was involved if human flesh was indeed found on the wafer. Police say they have no evidence of any crime.

Only Catholic fools believe this stuff. I'm sure this whole story is made up so the Catholic Church can turn Poland into a "profit Center" (again)

As I understand, anything proposed as a "miracle" has to be carefully evaluated. Then only if "authorized," can the faithful consider the event as signifcant and that too is only locally. Such manifestation only merit being consider, when they encourage the faithful to greater holiness.

It is "carefully evaluated" by the Catholic hierarchy. Kind of like having the Bank of America audited by... the Bank of America.

But ultimately in staying with your example, we all have to answer to the "US Treasury."

The best evaluation method for this is skepticism and human reason. So with this, I am absolutely convince its a fraud.

What a shame, those poor Catholics believe that a miracle did NOT occur.

You know -- the one that the Most Precious Body miraculously looks like bread, not 'Real Presence that looks like Real Presence' which allegedly happened here. This seems to be an incomplete "Institution" at best.

What a shame. Horrible, actually. Poor Poles.

but the details..cross contamination of evidence, handled by experts.?..this would be a tough one in a murder trial..like the one in Perugia.

I just love the stories that come about due to religious folklore. I have a stain on my floor that looks exaclty like a thumb. I believe its Jebus's thumb... try to prove otherwise people of common sense. Common sense has no place in religion, or else there would be no religion.. hail Jesus!

I believe God has more to do with his time than waste his time planning a "miracle" on a wafer; e.g. helping players and teams win football games

"But the RNA World hypothesis doesn't explain how RNA itself first arose. Like DNA, RNA is a complex molecule made of repeating units of thousands of smaller molecules called nucleotides that link together in very specific, patterned ways. While there are scientists who think RNA could have arisen spontaneously on early Earth, others say the odds of such a thing happening are astronomical.

"'The appearance of such a molecule, given the way chemistry functions, is incredibly improbable. It would be a once-in-a-universe long shot,' said Robert Shapiro, a chemist at New York University. 'To adopt this [view], you have to believe we were incredibly lucky.' "

At one time the church would put to death jews that they accused of piercing wafers with a pin so that the blood of christ would pour out. Wake up people.

What century do we live in again? I could have sworn it was the 21rst century, but lunacy like this makes me think I got my numbers backwards.

The problem with faith-based religions, and that includes all of them, is not in the details of their ideas and opinions, it is in the very idea of faith. Believing in something has nothing to do with whether or not it is true. This becomes particularly dangerous when unscrupulous persons notice that "believers" will follow any order that their "authorities" give them. The act of fervent belief transforms the believer into a fully controllable robot. This is why we have suicide bombers. The incredibly stupid and insane idea of killing random groups of innocent people, often including women and children, somehow becomes reasonable if the "authority" tells the believer that "god" wants them to do it. Any little bit of serious thought would allow a person to realize that the whole concept is absurd. A "god" would not do such a thing. Any being who would is certainly not worthy of being followed or worshiped, but the "authorities" know that, and carefully demand the kind of unthinking belief that overcomes all reason and logic. I strongly recommend that any "believers" consider what the limits of their belief might be, and consider to what degree they are willing to be controlled by the ideas of the "priests" or "authorities". A "believer" needs to understand that the orders are coming from other humans, not from any other source, no matter what the "authority" says about his or her connection to some "divine" power. Those are just more words.

A real miracle would be the safety of children throughout the world from Catholic pedofile priests, but, that is probably too much to ask. Given the Catholic Church can't keep its nose out of U.S. politics either.

2 cor. 5:16 Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh: yea, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no more. Idol worshipers cannot rightly divide the Bible. They can only teach false doctrine.

These people are just a bunch of idol worshipers and in reality are not true Christians. The bible says" no man can know Christ after the flesh anymore". The Bible is calling these people liars against the truth..
