Politics of Romney's tithing: generous philanthropy or dogmatic Mormonism?

The strength of Romney's religious conviction now has a dollar sign attached to it. Will his tithing invigorate the unease that many Americans feel toward the Mormon church?

As Republican candidate Mitt Romney’s voluminous tax returns sink into the American psyche, some line items stand out for sheer size, most notably his contributions to the Mormon church.

According to his 2010 tax returns and 2011 estimate, the former Massachusetts governor donated a total of $4.13 million to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints over those years.

Tithing at a 10 percent level of income is required of observant Mormons. Church founder Joseph Smith wrote that members of the faith “shall observe this law, or they shall not be found worthy to abide among you.”

A slew of poll results over the past year, from Gallup and the Pew Center to CNN and ABC, have all shown that Americans’ attitudes toward Mr. Romney’s Mormon faith may play a decisive role in his campaign.

Election 101: Nine facts about Mitt Romney and his White House bid

Now that the strength of his religious conviction has a dollar sign attached to it, the question arises: Will his tithing invigorate the uneasiness that many Americans, including evangelicals and some other Protestants, have toward the Mormon church and its adherents?

Some evangelicals who question the legitimacy of the religion, doubting its Christian credentials, may warm to Romney’s generosity, says Michele Dillon, sociology professor at the University of New Hampshire in Durham. Others, she adds by e-mail, “especially some who are already highly skeptical of Mormonism, will probably use his generous tithing as further evidence that Mormons, in these voters' minds, are too much in the clutches of their church, and who knows what he might do to advance some alleged ‘Mormon agenda’ if elected?"

The eye-popping number may be just the push that the issue needs to move to center stage in Romney’s campaign, says presidential historian Charles Dunn.

“Romney needs to tackle this issue head-on,” says the author of  “The Presidency in the 21st Century.” He likens this moment for the candidate to the question that faced John F. Kennedy in the 1960 presidential race when Baptists and other Protestant groups questioned whether his Catholic faith would divide his loyalties.

Kennedy opted to take the discussion directly to the Southern Baptists, speaking at their convention.

“He addressed them directly and told them that he was an American first,” says Professor Dunn, adding that the Democratic candidate made it clear that he would not allow the Vatican to make US policy. “Romney needs to have the equivalent of this moment for JFK,” he says, if for no other reason than to make clear that as the US Constitution says, “there shall be no religious qualification for office.”

Candidate Romney addressed the topic in his previous presidential run back in 2007, saying, “I believe in my Mormon faith and I endeavor to live by it,” even directly tackling the doctrinal question that some evangelical groups have raised, suggesting that Mormonism is not Christian.

“There’s one fundamental question about which I’m often asked,” he said, “What do I believe about Jesus Christ? I believe that Jesus Christ is the son of God and the savior of mankind.”

But questions of doctrine may always drive the issue for a sector of the population, says Jeffrey Berry, professor of political science at Tufts University in Medford, Mass.

“Mormonism could still emerge as a problem for Romney amongst a small group of Americans who are prejudiced against its teachings,” he says. However the most damaging information arising from the newly released tax reforms for a wider swathe of Americans he suggests, may relate more to offshore tax havens and foreign bank accounts.

Even if the level of Romney’s tithing pushes the issue of his faith into the spotlight, the level and length of his generosity may actually help broaden his appeal among many who might not otherwise relate to Mormon practices.

The practice of tithing is not unique to the Mormon church, points out Villanova University political science professor Catherine Wilson.

“In fact, it is common ecumenical practice by people of faith both in the United States and throughout the world,” she says, adding Romney’s large contributions to his church are representative of the fact that private charitable contributions to faith-based organizations far outstrip contributions to other kinds of nonprofits in the United States.

She notes that 33 percent of all private charitable contributions go directly to faith-based organizations, which is two-and-a-half times the contribution to any other nonprofit.

“This is an important part of the American philanthropic narrative that is largely unrecognized,” she says, adding that this makes Romney’s tithing something to which most Americans can relate.

Is it possible for the biased news to focus on important issues including the illegal occupations in the middle east and the $15 trillion mountain of debt that can't be paid back. Ask the candidates how they feel about the unconstitutional Homeland Security, TSA, NDAA and the Patriot Act and what steps they would to take to abolish this nonsense. Most importantly, ask the candidates how they would feel about cutting the federal govt in half to balance the budget since anybody that can do math knows that this is what is going to take!

What's the issue . . . his tithing? I'm Baptist, and I endeavor to faithfully tithe my income (10%) to my home church . . . as the Bible instructs. Although my 'total' doesn't come near Romney's . . . the principle is the same and I applaud his faithfulness. I wish others were as faithful to what they claim to believe.

But Jesus said you should give all you have. Come to him with nothing! Religions like the "10% rule", but the statements in the Bible said 10% to poor, widowed, lost and hungry. Most churches don't fit that bill. He never intended for your contribution to build the gleeming monuments to religion that we have now. Think we lost the meaning of "charitable:.

Leave Romney's religion alone, you are obviously very biased against it and the constant stream of negative articles proves it. He is a generous man, but has said he is an American first and foremost!!!
      • barbara B 4 mths ago
He put his country first when he went on an LDS mission during the vietnam war. Didn't he?

What I want to know is does Mitt Romney truly believe the American indians are a lost tribe of Israel and that his imaginary god lives on planet Kobol? Romney's goofy religion is as absurd as his candidacy.

what gets me is that this man is getting beat up just because he is amormon.how could anybody vote for newt over romney beats the hell out of me. he has to be pretty decent because he has been the puplic eye for a long time. if he had any women on the string other than his wife we would have heard about it before now. newt's been kicked out of congress and don't know how to keep his tool in the tool box with the door locked like your suppose to when your married. i believe if he wants to tithe that is his buisness , the law of tihing works i know from my own tithing .we have to get rid of obamer because if we don't the depression we see in the next 5-10 yrs is going to make what we are seeing now look like a sunday school picnic. a man's church doesn't make the man. utah's economy is in the top 5 of the best in the country maybe a mormon is what we need.
      • SPENCER 4 mths ago
I agree, Newt is a slimy reptile of a human being. I can never understand how people can bash someone for their religious beliefs and ignore all the terrible things Newt has done. Even if Mormonism was a cult, at least it has a strong moral foundation.
      • Joy B 4 mths ago
Ah, the resentment may be surfacing like it's religion, but it's really the "haves" vs the "have-nots". Newt has found that feeling of resentment and is working that. Has he found a cord with me? Maybe? Tough to struggle to pay the electric bill when the boss is flying in privates jets, buying kids new cars and businesses and taking a couple of vacations a year. Because of some investments, his tax rate will be -0- this year and mine will be much more than that. He could pay a couple of million in taxes and not even affect his life style.
      • SPENCER 4 mths ago
What i don't understand about most people is the hate of the rich. I consider my self lower middle class, but I want to be rich someday. Joy if one day you hit the lottery would you give it all away and still struggle to pay the electric bill? I doubt it. I would bet that all of the people that say they are 99%ers would change their lifestyle overnight if they were given that much money. And most of the candidates worked hard for the money they invested in the first place.

There's no gentle way to put it: People who give in to racism and prejudice may simply be dumb, according to a new study that is bound to stir public controversy.
The research finds that children with low intelligence are more likely to hold prejudiced attitudes as adults. These findings point to a vicious cycle, according to lead researcher Gordon Hodson, a psychologist at Brock University in Ontario. Low-intelligence adults tend to gravitate toward socially conservative ideologies, the study found. Those ideologies, in turn, stress hierarchy and resistance to change, attitudes that can contribute to prejudice, Hodson wrote in an email to LiveScience.

Ive known of racists with Phds. I think however the smarter they are the less willing they are to accept anything on faith . Whether its jesus allah or the tooth fairy. Read about shockleys studies in the 60s of IQs and race. He invented the transistor and got nobel prize Those nazis hung at Nuremberg had very high IQs.It was measured by a psychiatrist.

Scientific American did a study of the religious beliefs of engineers and scientists. Most engineers and scientists are religious. It is only those that consider themselves to be the most elite who tend towards atheism and they have a tendency to be the most prejudiced against those who do have a faith. This is from a Scientific American article from September 2000. My anecdotal experience is that nearly all engineers and scientists I have ever worked with have some kind of faith. Rarely have I met or worked with someone without a faith. I myself have an advanced engineering degree and am a Christian.

Ask Joe Biden. He gives almost nothing to charity.
      • theludman 4 mths ago
Biden is worse than Obama but that's not saying much. Biden gave a grand total of $369 to charity last year. The Obamas gave $10,000 which is only 1% of their income. So much for truly caring for the little guy in need.
      • david h 4 mths ago
Mitt's contributions are due's, did you miss that? Little guy in need, I see flies on the eyes of those pompous Mormon elders' that pull every string in Utah, Nevada, and so it is going. They don't even blink as they build 'rockets to god', best wood....

I don't know when I've actually seen an article in the last month that wasn't anti-Romney, and actually anti someone else (well, at least since Perry dropped out).
    • Dan  •  North Adams, Massachusetts  •  4 mths ago
I am not a Mormon, but I am abhorred that some people would give themselves the right to criticize someone else use of their earned money and get to criticize their charity period. Where are our freedoms?
    • Paul  •  4 mths ago
It's disturbing that during the 2008 Presidential campaign it was taboo to address Obama's religion, religious practices or church, but it is perfectly fine to go on and on about Romney's.

The stories about Rev. Wright, the Black Liberation Theology and how Obama somehow sat in Rev Wright's church on most sundays for twenty years and acknowleged him as a mentor, but somehow didn't hear or take in any of the racist, anti American, bigotted, anti semitic rhetoric were squelched as fast as the networks could, with the exception of Fox News. I can't read watch or hear a story about Romney, Santorum or Perry (when he was still running) without having their fiath analyzed.

I don't even like Romney, but this biased coverage is just sickening. The media should report on all facts about all canidates, not manipulate the publics opinion on one canidate over another with their selective coverage.
    • Joy B  •  San Antonio, Texas  •  4 mths ago
Why is this news? Let me just say that I'm not and evengelical Christian, but I do believe Mormonism is a cult and Joseph Smith was con-man who re-wrote the Bible to his favor. Having said all that, Romney is allowed to have any faith he choses and do whatever else he wants with his money. He's definitely the 1%, and it's his right to chose the recipients of his wealth.
    • Clokdok  •  4 mths ago
So tithing is OK if you're Baptist, Catholic, or anything else - just not if you're a Morman???
    • Digger  •  4 mths ago
Why does it have to be either/or? Isn't generosity dogmatic of the Mormon and Christian faiths? By definition, in order to comply with Christian (and Mormon) dogma, a person should be generous.
The question asked by this reporter is no different than asking, "Is he truly kind to his neighbor or is he just being a Chrisian?"
    • Zarahemlan  •  4 mths ago
Tithing is not new. It's been there since Malachi in the Old Testament. ( Malachi 3:8) The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints do not use this to pay salaries to their pastors,or bishops, or prohets!!!! Not a single penny!!!!!!!!To them this is the Lord's money. Their sign of LOVE to the Lord that they keep his commandments. They use this to further the mission of Jesus Christ. Like to build Temples and meeting Houses. For example if the members in any part of the globe is lacking funds to build a meeting house, the Church would make sure that it will be constructed out of this tithing. They follow the way the 12 apostles of Jesus Christ did. They were not paid in serving the Lord. Like in the ancient times, these poor Mormons were rejected and even butchered like Joseph Smith. The unbelievers rejected everything these apostles of Jesus taught including the principle of tithing!!!! Look at their website.www.lds.org.....
    • maggie  •  4 mths ago
The majority of Baptists tithe. Are you going to gripe about that too? Romney has not tried to force his religious views on anyone. If you don't want religion in your government, don't mess around in his religion. It's none of your business.
    • Living the dream  •  4 mths ago
Romneys tithes are his business why is this never an issue with Harry Reid, who is just as Mormon as Mitt. Your religious concerns hold no water, how did Mitt's religion govern Mass. while he was Governor, They did not.
    • New User  •  4 mths ago
Tithing, religion...totally the mans' own business, and none of ours. I'm more concerned about the tax breaks for the super rich.
    • Kevin  •  Monett, Missouri  •  4 mths ago
Any church using the tax exempted donations of its members to infuence legislation should immediately lose its tax exempt status

Who cares about the minimum amount he gave. His religion to me is not a factor. All I want to know is if they are not ill gotten gains & what is he going to do about getting people back to work. Mormons as a rule are very helpful to not only Mormons but to anyone in need. Now as a politician who knows Talk is cheap.
    • soccermom5  •  Mesa, Arizona  •  4 mths ago
Here is the problem, you can't argue with most LDS because they are insulated from the real world and ignorant of other religion's beliefs and the history of most religions (including their own church history). They are born into it and most every aspect of their lives revolves around the church. They are "friendly" with non-mormons but never best friends. No overnights at non-LDS friend's houses. They live in LDS neighborhoods, have most social interactions through church sponsored events, go to majority LDS public schools and then on to BYU where they are not encouraged to think for themselves or question anything (actually, most religions are like this so it's hardly specific to Mormonism. They are just very successful in keeping their members in line.) They get married right away and start cranking out kids so they can continue the LDS cycle. I would encourage any Mormons reading this to not get defensive and just actually do some reading on your own. Look into your church's history. Research any idea that some authority doesn't want you to. Read books and articles not officially sanctioned by SLC. Read books of which the church doesn't approve. Look at the hierarchy of religious organizations and who stands to benefit from the "rules". Draw your own conclusions.

Why must the media continually print article after article about the Mormon faith?? Please give it a rest & concentrate on issues surrounding our country and the election.
