Poll: Obama disapproval soars to 54 percent in Va

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — President Barack Obama's disapproval rating has soared to 54 percent in Virginia, a battleground state the Democrat took from the Republicans to win the White House in 2008 and will likely need to carry next year to win re-election, a new poll released Thursday shows.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, based on telephone interviews with 1,368 registered voters from Sept. 7-12, found that only 40 percent approved of the president's performance, down from 48 percent in the same survey in June. Six percent were undecided. The survey's margin of sampling error was plus or minus 2.7 percentage points.

The results mirror other polls that show a continuing slide in the president's popularity in a slow, troubled economy.

In the Virginia survey, a majority — 51 percent — said they did not think Obama deserves to be re-elected, compared to 41 percent who would re-elect him. Eight percent didn't know or wouldn't say.

Most troubling for Obama is his poor performance among independents, many of whom supported him three years ago. Sixty-three percent of unaligned voters disapproved of the way Obama is handling his duties while only 29 percent approved.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry shot to the front of a 10-candidate Republican field among respondents who identified themselves as Republicans or Republican-leaning voters. Twenty-nine percent listed Perry as their top choice, and 19 percent said former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney was their favorite. No other candidate was in double digits.

When the Republicans were asked if their primary came down to a choice between Perry and Romney, 43 percent chose Perry and 36 percent chose Romney.

In hypothetical matchups against Obama put before all of those surveyed, Perry and Romney were in statistical dead heats with the president. In a pairing against Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachman, Obama was favored 48 percent to 37 percent. Against Sarah Palin, who has not declared her candidacy, 50 percent chose Obama to 35 percent for the former Alaska governor and John McCain's 2008 vice presidential running mate.

The poll is released as candidates already begin targeting Virginia voters. Obama kicked off his nationwide tour aimed at pressuring Congress to adopt his jobs bill in Richmond on Friday. Perry delivered speeches Wednesday at a convocation at Liberty University in Lynchburg and a sold-out GOP fundraiser in Richmond.

For the life of me i don't understand all the hostility towards this president. Some people act like hes the cause of every one of america's problems. Maybe I'm missing something but i don't understand how a president that's been in office 3 years can be held accountable for problems that started 8 or 16 years ago. Granted he's the current president so he has to be held accountable for things that happen on his watch but a lot of people are putting burdens on his shoulder that he doesn't deserve. Americans talk about fairness but this president has never been treated in a fair manor. There were people(with power) that hoped he failed as a president from day one, so when i hear the comments about the President being a divider.....i just don't understand.
I'm curious to see how people react towards the next president(if Obama doesn't get re elected)once he doesn't produce results quick enough. If a Republican is elected it will probably be business as usual and the reforms that need to be made will never happen. Obama is not perfect but at least he is trying to make changes in a thoughtful way. He seems to be trying to fix some of the problems that caused america to be put in the position that its in but the masses don't seem to be ready for real change. I really believe that if the president gets a second term he can turn things around. Some people believe the mistake was to elect Obama but i believe the mistake was to elect some of them tea party members to congress. Not all of them are bad but some of them seem to be willing to let the country go further down the drain for an "Ideal". I know the economy is bad and the president deserves some of the blame but he doesn't deserve all the animosity, disrespect, racism and hate that he's receiving. The man is trying and regardless of what some idiot like Rush Limbaugh or Glen Beck says,im sure he loves america just as much as any previous president.
I cant help but to think about that saying "Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it". That seems to ring true for America. Regardless, i hope Obama gets re elected.

Weapons linked to ATF's disastrous "Fast and Furious" operation have been tied to at least eight violent crimes in Mexico including three murders, four kidnappings and an attempted homicide. In addition, a THIRD weapon was linked to the murder of Agent Brian Terry
How many murders are enough to put Eric Holder & Co. behind bars?

I continue to read on here that it is congress that make the major decisions, they control the purse strings and etcetera, If that is true then why do you clap and etc. whenever bummer kept saying it "HAS BEEN BUSH'S FAULT FOR THE MESS, you lying libs can't have it both ways. Is it congress/Senate or president??????

I have been watching his (B.O.) beloved liberial news nedia, and these people are also starting to see the light. That him and his gang are taking the U.S. In the wrong direction as peoples say. B.O.has no plans to stop spending, giving our money away and keep talking and do nothing. Along with the Senate he controls. All of them keep balming others for their oen short comings. People are getting tired of the same old speaches, but the union types.

Don't kid yourself. The media is only reporting the plummeting pole numbers because they know obama can't get re-elected. They are looking for a replacement for barry not because he is a failure, but because they know we know he is a failure. They don't care who is in power as long as they despise this country and are willing to keep doing what obama has already done.

i live in N.Y. and i know a lot of people and i have not found one person who says they will vote for another democrat and certainly not obama,so i think the poll is off by another 45 percent making it almost a hundred percent disapproval

Blacks people must really be a great race (king and queens of races), have to be the race from God. Only race i see where every other race hates yet every other race trys to duplicate. Why do you think while being genocide they still remain strong ( have to be because they are the chosen race). You can hate but you cannot stop.

Im not surprised… Most people don't understand how well Obama is repairing the abortion of a an economy that GW created.. But then again they are the ignorant fools who voted for GW twice.. We get what we deserve.. plain and simple. "Stupid is as stupid does" ….Forrest Gump's mom
