    Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center is the First Community Hospital in California to Perform Robotic Assisted Surgery with Flourescence Guided Imaging

    Southern California Medical Center has performed the first minimally invasive robotic surgery with Flourescence Guided Imagery in a community hospital setting.

    Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center is the first community hospital in California to perform robotic assisted surgery with fluorescence guided imaging.

    Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center (PVHMC) was the first in the area to perform robotic assisted surgeries with the da Vinci Surgical System in 2005, and now has become the first community hospital in California to provide the most state-of-the-art technology available for minimally invasive robotic assisted surgery with the installation of the da Vinci Si, 3D, HD Surgical System with Fluorescence Imaging.

    Adam Hickerson, M.D. performed the first minimally invasive prostatectomy at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center utilizing the new near-infrared fluorescence imaging guided system on Monday. The patient recovered well and return home on Wednesday. Dr. Hickerson is among a small group of surgeons in the southwest trained on this technology. “It is exciting to be a part of the first community implementation of robotic fluorescence in California. This technology helps us in identification of the vessels and the nerves surrounding the prostate in efforts to increase potency and continence, in hope to cure disease with minimal side effects,” Dr. Hickerson says. “I am excited about the future of this technology and am anxious to apply this in renal tumors where we can better isolate blood vessels in allowing us to remove kidney cancers leaving as much normal tissue behind with little damage.”

    The da Vinci robotic surgical system gives surgeons the benefit of 3-D, high-definition imaging, allowing them to perform the most complicated surgeries more precisely. These innovative procedures offer patients a minimally invasive alternative to traditional surgery with better results. In most cases, patients experience less pain, less bleeding, and less risk of infection or injury; which may result in a shorter recovery time and faster return to their normal lives.

    The specially designed camera and endoscopes allow surgeons to capture images of tissue and surrounding blood vessels by injecting a unique fluorescence dye IndoCyanine Green (ICG) that is activated by near-infrared light. In addition to standard real-time images of the surgical field, the camera can switch to view the images of tissue and surrounding blood vessels illuminated by the special dye when exposed to the near-infrared light.
