Pope Benedict XVI names 22 new cardinals

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Benedict XVI named 22 new cardinals Friday, including prelates in such key posts as New York and Hong Kong and a large group of Italians holding major Vatican positions.

Cardinals are the pope's top advisers, the elite group of churchmen who will eventually elect Benedict's successor. Of the 22, 18 are under the age of 80 — raising to 125 the number of cardinals eligible to vote in the next papal conclave. Cardinals over 80 are not allowed to vote on the next pope.

Other new cardinals come from Berlin, Prague, Toronto and Florence, Italy.

The Vatican officials include a Brazilian prelate who heads the office for Consecrated Life.

The pope announced the names "with great joy" following an Epiphany Mass that ended the Vatican's main Christmas celebrations. He said they will be formally elevated at a Feb. 18 ceremony in Rome.

The list includes two Americans: Archbishop Timothy Dolan of New York and Archbishop Edwin O'Brien, Grand Master of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre and the former archbishop of Baltimore.

The pope named 16 Europeans as cardinals, including seven Italians. He also named Joao Braz de Aviz, a Brazilian who heads the Vatican office for religious life; John Tong Hon, bishop of Hong Kong; and George Alencherry, archbishop of the Syro-Malabar church in India.

The 18 new cardinals under 80 are:

Fernando Filoni, (Italian), Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples

Manuel Monteiro de Castro, (Portuguese), Major Penitentiary of the Apostolic Penitentiary

Santos Abril y Castello, (Spanish), Archpriest of the Basilica of St. Mary Major

Antonio Maria Veglio, (Italian), President of the Pontifical Council for Migrants and Refugees

Giuseppe Bertello, (Italian), President of the Government of the Vatican City State

Francesco Coccopalmerio, (Italian), President of the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts

Joao Braz de Aviz, (Brazil), Prefect of the Congregation for Religious

Edwin O'Brien, (United States), Grand Master of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre

Domenico Calcagno, (Italian), President of the Apostolic Patrimony of the Holy See

Giuseppe Versaldi, (Italian), President of the Prefecture for the Economic Affairs of the Holy See

George Alencherry, (Indian), Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church in India

Thomas Collins, (Canadian), Archbishop of Toronto

Dominik Duka, (Czech), Archbishop of Prague

Wim Eijk, (Dutch), Archbishop of Utrecht

Giuseppe Bettori, (Italian), Archbishop of Florence

Timothy Dolan, (United States) Archbishop of New York

Thomas Woelki, (German), Archbishop of Berlin

John Tong Hon, (Chinese), Bishop of Hong Kong

What a sham.Only a fool would believe this hocus pocus.A circus played on the gullible. The 22 should be bagging groceries for a real job at Wallmarts.

these are some of the creepiest men i've ever seen. why do they wear dresses and the fish hat of the ancient Sumerian god Dogon? The church has a pagan past-and the people are waking up. god does not need freaks to communicate with real enlightened human beings.

At least the Vatican has zero unemployment.

WOW.. isnt HE the new cardinal] PRECIOUS in his pointy hat and lace cuffs. ????. i bet he could charm the church in starting a NEW INQUISITION. [ its the christian thing to do in these difficult times when the church is being exposed for what it is. ...... bigoted hateful hypocrites].

There are 1.3 billion Chinese. Among them I surmise at least 20 million catholics. Only one Chinese cardinal? or two.
      • Donovan O'Gara 4 mths ago
Noway - Thank your murdering, atheist, communist leader for the past half century for trying to take over with their 'official' Church and driving the REAL Catholic Church underground with murder and persecution. People get the government that they deserve.
      • Frank Ernesto 4 mths ago
Surmise more like 200 Chinese, they do not get taxpayer subsidy as in this country.

There is also a dearth of Latin American and African cardinals. Mostly because they disagree with some of the Pope's stances.
    • SilenceDoGoodII  •  4 mths ago
This Pope is in frail health. One wonders if he is naming new cardinals because he wants to change the direction of the church before he dies, or if he is doing so to perpetuate the conservative stamp that John Paul II imposed on the church and he inherited.
      • Jacqueline Theodelinda 4 mths ago
I guess you wish John Paul II would have "imposed" a liberal group of cardinals.
      • Bob 4 mths ago
Benedict was the architect of the conservative stamp you speak of. He was JPII right hand man and they packed the college of cardinals with like minded folks. I am sure this is more of the same or else you would see more Latin American Liberation Theologians.
      • Jacqueline Theodelinda 4 mths ago
I for one am grateful for the work of John Paul II and Benedict XVI.

Just love it when people jump all over the Catholic as if they are so pure & holy .
Well here are 2 facts for you .
      1) Every organization has low life's in it , Teachers , Law Enforcement , Military , CEO's , Politicians , etc . The Catholic Church did not corner the market on bad behavior .

      2) Catholic Church has done more good throughout it's history than bad . Needless to say they will never be given the credit for doing so .

Finally , if you are without Sin then I guess you can cast the first stone . However I find that hard to believe since we all Sin daily . so until the day of judgement I suggest we all watch how we judge . For surely we will be judged with the same standard as we judged other's .

The catholic church has wiped out cultures and civilizations and then brainwashed much of the world.
      • Donovan O'Gara 4 mths ago
Mel - Or you are afraid of a highly moral organization that has existed for two MILLENIA and will certainly exist long after you and your bigotry are long gone.

        Mel, you're brainwashed.

more christians to trust and believe him even they are also cathloics,

Dear Vartanb, the Catholic church cannot help you. You need to read a book called "the Great Controversy" you will get a full eye view of the Catholic church.
      • Jacqueline Theodelinda 4 mths ago
The Great Controversy is biased anti-Catholic literature from the 19th century. It is far from historically accurate.
    • Jamie  •  4 mths ago
Wow this article has been up for almost 2 hours and not one mention of Democrats or Republicans (until now that is). Guess there really is a separation of church and state :-)

The comments here are representative of people who don't know &^&^&. Let's have a education. According to the current government reports. 27% of all child sex abuse occurs in Social Services, 23% occurs in the Public School System and a whopping 29% occurs in the Home. Less than .01% occurs in the clergy. So it seems the majority child sex abuse is committed by organizations that liberals and democrats just love

The fear of God lies deep in the heart of the righteous. God has His way of acknowledging the righteous even in the face of dishonesty. Congratulations to the new Cardinals and we pray that they will leave by the good and perfect example of the Pope.

As a recovering catholic, I am sure this is to fill openings created in efforts to clean up their image... OK haters, bring it on... :)
    • Zaraki  •  4 mths ago
As a Saint Louis Cardinals fan, drafting 22 new Cardinals is irresponsible and many will be cut from the team come April. I mean look at them, they are so...old... how do they expect to make the team? Divine intervention? yeah, right...
    • Patrick  •  4 mths ago
It's interesting to note that the Indian cardinal heads an Eastern Rite church. There are 1.4 billion Roman Catholics worldwide, the largest and oldest Christian denomination as well as the biggest charity (and educational) organization.
    • Patrick  •  4 mths ago
Watch your prideful comments. The Catholic church remains the only truly international and multiracial Christian denomination. It's also the world's largest charity organization.
    • David  •  4 mths ago
The church teaches more than the public schools.
