Pope calls for responsible, credible climate deal

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Benedict XVI called Sunday for delegates attending this week's U.N. climate change conference in South Africa to craft a responsible and credible deal to cut greenhouse gases that takes into account the needs of the poor.

Some 25,000 government officials, lobbyists and scientists are expected to attend the two-week conference that opens Monday in Durban. The immediate focus is the pending expiration of the Kyoto Protocol, the 1997 agreement requiring 37 industrialized countries to slash carbon emissions to 5 percent below 1990 levels by 2012.

Western governments are expected to try to get China and other growing economies to accept legally binding curbs on greenhouse gases, as well. Poor countries want the signatories to accept further reductions in a second commitment period up to at least 2017.

Benedict, who has been dubbed the "green pope" for his environmental concerns, launched an appeal Sunday to government representatives attending the Durban conference to craft a responsible revised Kyoto deal.

"I hope that all members of the international community agree on a responsible and credible response to this worrisome and complex phenomenon, taking into account the needs of the poorest and future generations," he said during his traditional Sunday blessing from his studio overlooking St. Peter's Square.

Benedict denounced the failure of world leaders to agree to a successor treaty to Kyoto during a 2009 U.N. climate summit in Copenhagen. He said then that world peace depends on safeguarding God's creation.

The 84-year-old German pope has voiced increasing concern about protecting the environment in his encyclicals, during foreign trips, speeches to diplomats and in his annual peace message. Under Benedict's watch, the Vatican has installed photovoltaic cells on its main auditorium to convert sunlight into electricity and has joined a reforestation project aimed at offsetting its CO2 emissions.

For the pontiff, it's a moral issue: Church teaching holds that man must respect creation because it's destined for the benefit of humanity's future. He has argued that climate change and natural catastrophes threaten people's rights to life, food, health and ultimately peace.

The climate change aganda has shown its hand "takes into account the needs of the poor"

right, why should we care about anyone but the feudal lords of the world.

The poor and the workers are like cattle. They are there to be used as needed and slaughtered as necessary.

Runaway population also threatens those things. Perhaps the Pope can address that issue as well.
      • CeeCee 6 mths ago
He can't, because his focus is on making MORE money off MORE people.
      • carpenter 6 mths ago
That is really at the crux of this whole issue. Global warming is just a symptom of overpopulation.
But that is a huge hot button that no one wants to touch.
      • Joe 6 mths ago
        Nothing is wrong with the population. I'm glad that I'm not a classic Malthusian. You guys can't even get it right one time, so you have to start legislating to manufacture shortages 'in the name of the environment'. That's just really sick.;

I didn't know Vatican City had it's own weather men. C'mon really the Pope is involved with the climate. This comes from a group who put people to death for saying the earth wasn't flat and the sun revolved us. Doesn't the Catholic Church have more important issues to worry about then this?
      • SisyphusSyzygy 5 mths ago
They have their own weatherman, their own laws and courts, postage, money, police, spy apparatus, black ops, radio and tv stations, The Vatican has all the accessories a country has, because it is a country.

Please do your research. God is not the name of our Creator. His personal Hebrew name is YAHUAH. This is the pronunciation of the four letters our Creator wrote on the stone tablets for Moses to bring to His people. They are called tetragramaton because there are four letters. The four letters are YHVH, YOD HAY UAU HAY.
And the name of our Savior most people call Jesus is YAHUSHUA (YAHUSHA).
You may ask how this came about?
When the Pagans were converted to Christianity, they brought along with them their Pagan deities and Pagan practices. They replaced these Holy Sacred Names with the names of their own gods.
For example, Lord means BAAL, Jesus means horse. God and Christ are of Pagan origins.
Of course the Bible translators did not help either. They helped propagate false teachings. Of course our churches are not helping either. They keep propagating the wrong names, teachings and doctrines.
May be this is what the Bible says, many are called but few are chosen. I wonder sometime how many of the billions of prophesing Christians really call upon the TRUE SACRED NAME OF OUR CREATOR, YAHUAH AND THE TRUE SACRED NAME OF OUR SAVIOR, YAHUSHUA (YAHUSHA).
The Bible says there is only one name under heaven by which people can be saved. And that name is YAHUSHUA (YAHUSHA). Are you saved in that name?
In this age of instant communication, there is no reason to be ignorant. For your soul's sake do your research and start calling upon the True Sacred Names, YAHUAH, OUR CREATOR and YAHUSHUA (YAHUSHA) OUR SAVIOR.
YAHUAH BLESS YOU AND KEEP YOU.

I think that's a message we can all agree with. Protecting God's green earth is something we should all strive for, and work together for.

Pollution is the biggest threat to mankind in the long-term.
      • joyce 6 mths ago
you realize much of the earth has been permanently ruined. ONLY God can undo the mess we've made.
      • EvanB 6 mths ago
Just because serious damage has been done, doesn't mean we should keep on doing more damage. And it doesn't mean we should stop trying to repair such damage.

To succeed, you have to fail. To fail, you have to try.

If you don't mind my asking ... are we talking about the same pimp (oops, pope)? You know, that one who dresses like a pimp, leaves in a palace, pays no taxes, runs the most corrupt organization in the face of the earth, has pedophile employees, is against birth control pills, the one who was a nazi? Uhmmm ... very qualified to talk about legal and moral principles ...
    • Mahmoud  •  5 mths ago
This is about the only reasonable thing I've heard this pope say.
    • Eccentric_Crank  •  6 mths ago
The pope can reduce the REAL source problem with pollution by legalizing birth control for catholics...Which would solve the root of all pollution and 99.9% of the rest of the worlds' problems...which is over population!!

Why not just ask GOD to help? After all-according to the myth--HE created the heavens and the earth--why can't HE fix it?

the poor wouldn't be so poor if the Vatican wasn't so rich.
    • Ken  •  6 mths ago
The call for action against climate change stands in dramatic, stark contrast to the position on birth control. Overpopulation is the core problem of global warming. Taken from the environment's view, creating a new person far exceeds any conservation effort by that individual. The church must immediately reverse its position and enthusiastically advocate birth control in all nations. Family planning is THE most effective thing we can do to combat climate change.

The pope needs to clean his own house before trying to clean the globe.
    • Marpious  •  6 mths ago
did you know that in catholicism, there is no guarantee that you will go to heaven....now think about that ...if , as a catholic, you can do and say all that catholics do and say and still not get into heaven , then that means that all that you did and said as a catholic didnt amount to a hill of beans...this means that you could be eating the eucharist in vain, praying the hail mary in vain, going to mass in vain, going to confession in vain, lighting candles in vain, observing lent in vain, singing in the choir in vain, dipping you hand in holy water in vain, kneeling sitting standing in vain, saying "and also with you" in vain, praying the our father in vain, reciting the litany of the saints in vain....yes, it could be all in vain, because in catholicism, there is no guaratnee of going to heaven...even having done all that...think about it
    • CptSnark  •  6 mths ago
If the Pope really wants to help, he would support birth control and zero population growth.
    • julie  •  6 mths ago
Did the pope ever think that the burgeoning population...now 7 billion ...might be a factor in the pollution of our planet. He should demand that every catholic practice birth control.

The poor won't be better off when the fossil fuels we have become 100% dependent on are depleted and/or Saudi Arabia gets overthrown from within. More food will be converted into fuel. And what fuel there is will be out of reach of the poor.
